Eating Out - Hendersons Pumpkin Pie

on
Monday 26 September 2016
I'm a little embarrassed to admit that until last weekend I had never tasted pumpkin pie. It's just something I never expected to like, so I didn't bother trying it. Then I was in Hendersons in Edinburgh with my mum having our usual vegan lunch and this happened...

It might not be the best photo, but OH MY GOD it tasted so good!!! It came with coconut whipped cream and two flavours just worked so well together.

If you're in Edinburgh soon, then you really do need to stop by and try it. Just don't eat too much or they won't be any left for me.

Eating Out - Vegan Platter

on
Friday 23 September 2016

You know vegan food is becoming more popular when there's a bar just five minutes from your home that has its own vegan platter on the menu.

Leith Depot is a restaurant and bar with a live music venue upstairs, and this is their vegan platter (excuse the photo but the light inside wasn't too bright).

The platter has stuffed vine leaves, mixed olives, smoked tomato hummus, sweet potato wedges (they were more like fries), beer battered pickles, vegan cheese on toast, chimmi churri pesto, bourbon bloody mary ketchup, olive oil and balsamic. It was also came with some extra bread and crackers.

Overall, the platter was delicious and more than enough for two people. I don't really like olives or pickles, so my friend enjoyed them while I ate my way through the vines leaves and sweet potatoes. I also cannot explain how excited I am to see vegan cheese on toast on a menu. I have a feeling I'm going to end in Leith Depot a lot especially since you can order it on its own too.

The only downside is the kitchen gets busy easily so you can't always order food straight away. The first time I tried to get food, I was told there was a 30 minute wait before I could even order anything so we ended up eating elsewhere. Then when I was in having the platter, we had another 15 minute wait before we could order even though the place wasn't too busy.

It's definitely worth a visit if you're in Edinburgh and it's not far from the town centre. Just make sure you leave enough time in case there's a wait for food.

International Earthlings Experience Day

on
Saturday 17 September 2016

Last weekend, I was out with Earthlings Experience Scotland crew in Glasgow for International Earthlings Experience Day.

This was only the second time I had taken part in one of the Earthlings Experience events, but I couldn't feel more at home with this amazing group of people. They are genuinely some of the nicest people I've ever met, and it's really nice to be making friends with people who are also vegan. I have some great non-vegan friends and family who eat out in vegan restaurants with me, but it's never the same as eating out people who share the same views as you.

I was a little nervous about the reaction we'd get because it happened to be the same day as the first Old Firm game in 5 years. Luckily there weren't many drunken football fans hanging about, so we didn't get much hassle at all. There's always a couple of people who walk past and shout about how much they want a burger, but most of the time it's only to show off in front of their friends.

The overall reaction was fantastic. We had so many people stop to look at the footage and take flyers, and just chat about what they were watching. A couple of the guys in the group filmed the whole day, and you can watch it below -

SourcedBox - September Taste Test

on
Sunday 11 September 2016

The latest SourcedBox arrived through my door last week, and I decided to do something a bit different. I was taste test videos ALL THE TIME on YouTube. so I figured I'd sit down and try my own. It went pretty well until my camera battery died towards the end of the video, but luckily it was just coconut oil and tea left, and I wasn't planning on tasting either of them anyway.

I've been getting SourcedBox for a while now, and I really like it. It's a monthly subscription box full of healthy snacks and 99% of them are vegan. I think I've only come across one or two products that have had any honey or bee pollen in them. I do try to not eat everything at once, but I may have already eaten about a third of this box in a day. I guess it's going to be a bit of a long wait until the next one comes out.

It would be great to know if you like this type of video and then I can try do it again with a full charged camera for next month's box too.

You can find SourcedBox on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

Eating Out - The Best Cheesecake Ever!!

Say hello to the best cheesecake I have ever eaten! I've always been a big cheesecake fan, but this triple layer mojito cheesecake from Stereo in Glasgow was something else.

I noticed it on their Instagram page during the week, and luckily the still had some left when
the earthlings turned up on Saturday for some food after our demo.

After looking over the menu about 10 times, I went for the TLT sandwich (tempeh, lettuce and tomato) and chips for my main course. It was really, really good. I'm not a massive tempeh fan usually, but I was craving carbs and it hit the spot.

So if you're in Glasgow soon, then you need to stop by Stereo and have this cheesecake while they still have some left.

Eating Out - Treacle

on
Tuesday 6 September 2016
Sometimes you have the best intention of going to the gym at lunch until your friend suggests going to Treacle for food instead. I've been going to Treacle for the past few years, but lately it seems like they've been adding more vegan options to the menu including a banana, salted caramel and coconut cream pie!!!

I opted for this delicious vegan sandwich for lunch.

The banh mai was filled with roast cauliflower, radish, cashews, zucchini and red chili glaze. It also came with a mug of hand cut chips. It really was delicious, although I did struggle to bite into it without the filling going everywhere.

The only downside in Treacle's menu is that a lot of their vegan options contain honey. I know there's some vegans who don't have a problem eating honey, but most of us don't eat it. We're not being picky about it. It's just not something we would eat. However Treacle will serve dishes without honey, so we can't hold it against them too much. I ordered crispy bean curd with spiced red pepper guac and no honey a few weeks ago, and it was really good.

Blitz Raw Cakes

on
Sunday 4 September 2016

I finally got to try some raw vegan cakes from Blitz this weekend. The company has a juice bar in Falkirk, and they also sell their cakes at different markets in Edinburgh and Glasgow. I picked these up at the Edinburgh Farmers Market yesterday, and they were definitely worth the wait.

One is cookies and cream and the other is banana and passionfruit. They were both really good, but I'd go with the banana and passionfruit if I had to pick a favourite of the two. They had lots of different kinds of cakes, but quite a few had nuts in them and I'm still not a massive fan anything that's too nutty.

If you're in Falkirk then you should definitely drop by the Blitz Juice Bar in Callendar Square. It's great to see vegan food on sale in Falkirk as there really wasn't much available when I was living there. They regular sell their cakes at different markets too, so keep an eye on their Facebook page to see where you can pick some up.
